AGNUS DEI

The Agnus Dei is the final movement of the Missa Miamiensis, commissioned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Church of the Epiphany, Washington, D.C.

It was composed during the Summer of 1993 while the composer was on sabbatical in Miami Beach, (hence the “Latinized” title which translates as The Miami Mass.)

Although its themes recount motifs from preceding movements, (Kyrie eleison, Gloria in

excelsis, Sanctus & Benedictus) the Agnus Dei is offered here as a stand-alone piece. (See MISSA MIAMIENSIS to purchase the complete score with all movements). It is scored for SATB choir (with divisi), organ, piano, soprano saxophone or oboe, and an optional part for snare drum (which is only necessary if the Mass is performed in its entirety). Although originally intended for liturgical use, the work (and indeed, the entire Mass) is an effective concert-piece exhibiting a plethora of instrumental and choral color and texture. Duration: approximately 10 minutes.

This piece has been recorded on GOTHIC RECORDS 49319 by the Choir of Saint James, conducted by the composer, and is available at stjla.org/album/ or through your favorite retailer.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,

miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,

miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,

dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,

have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,

have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,

grant us peace.
